With tensions from the 2020 Presidential Election still raw and fresh in the minds of the American public, the removal of former president Donald Trump from the ballots in the State of Maine has sparked considerable controversy and raised legal questions. This has come in the wake of several other states considering the removal of the former president from their ballots, with Colorado successfully doing so in December of 2023.
Election law expert and attorney David Di Pietro was brought on Newsmax TV’s American Agenda show to discuss the legalities of the situation. In addition to the legally questionable status of Trump as an insurrectionist in the eyes of the law, David mentioned the equally serious issue of his removal from the Republican Primary voting, eliminating Mr. Trump’s opportunity to win the nomination in Maine. By doing this, he argues, Maine’s Secretary of State Shenna Bellows has moved beyond her role in regulating elections to now interfering with internal party affairs. Additionally, he explains that this is very concerning because it was a unilateral decision with no due process or recourse. Overall, he states that this decision to bar Trump from the ballot not only is depriving Maine residents from their right to vote, but its also interfering with the Republican Party from having the right to pick their own candidate.
David was chosen by Newsmax as a subject matter expert due to his experience as a former prosecutor and election litigation attorney.
